If you have ever wondered whether a water birth is a less painful way of giving birth, here’s the answer. 

Dr Ting Hua Sieng, specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology at The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Centre, says: “Water provides buoyancy.

The feeling of floating makes you feel lighter and helps your body relax, so you might assume that giving birth in water will hurt less. 

In fact, the intensity of labour pain remains the same.”

Mums-to-be in Singapore are warming up to this alternative because it is seen as a “more natural” birthing method.

However, if you have a complicated pregnancy (for example, you’re carrying twins, your baby is in a breech position or if continuous foetal heartbeat monitoring is required during labour), this option is not suitable for you.
